A note from our Musical Director, Howard Kane...
The works for our main concert for the Autumn on Saturday 24th October are a pairing of Vivaldi’s ever-popular setting of the Gloria with a lively setting of the Magnificat attributed to Pergolesi. We will be performing both pieces with a small orchestra. Our soloists will not only contribute to the Vivaldi but also perform ravishing movements from a Vivaldi cantata, “Nulla in mundo pax sincera” and the meltingly beautiful opening duet from Pergolesi’s setting of the “Stabat Mater”.
Our offering on Monday 14th December will be a Christmas programme with a new twist! Alongside the audience’s favourite sing-along carols there will be some noticeable jazzy and bluesy inflections in both our sacred and secular choices. Chilcott’s 15 minutes’ “Nideros Mass”, (basically Little Jazz Mass 2) is a fitting work for a seasonal programme as Trondheim is the start of The Arctic Circle Express and we all know who live there! In secular mood, Chilcott’s fabulously eclectic setting of the 12 Days of Christmas will keep the jazz groove to the fore, a jazz trio will accompany us. Syncopation is not unknown in Matthias’ “Sir Christemas” or Rutter’s “When the Saints go marching in.
Our main concert in the Spring term on Saturday 10th April will be a revisiting of works by Dvorak, including the “Te Deum” with the friends who performed with us on their last outing in 2016: Jenny Rust and Terence Ayebare.
The final concert of the season will bring together the combined vocal forces of Frodsham and Sandbach. We will perform a joint programme on consecutive weekends. On Saturday 19th June, at Sandbach and the following weekend, 26th June, we will host the performance in Frodsham. The first half of the programme will contain a kaleidoscope of popular choral pieces including Handel’s “Zadok the Priest” and Parry’s “I was glad.” We hope to be joined by Laurie Ashworth, to sing Mendelssohn’s “Hear my prayer” and the second part of the programme will be devoted to a performance of Elgar’s “From the Bavarian Highlands”.
This is a most varied and exciting season in prospect.
